SUMMARY:A Farewell to Bill Dunmire - One More Hike With Bill
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who knew Bill or simply had a hike with him\, how would you\, in a few short words\, describe him?  Naturalist\, park ranger\, author\, photographer\, rock and mountain climber\, river cruise aficionado\, loving husband\, father and friend\, composter\, actor/singer in Gilbert and Sullivan musicals\, volunteer weather tracker\, expert on native flora and fauna\, educator?  Yes\, he was all these things and more.  He was a dedicated fundraiser for our library as well as a feisty sponsor for its xeric and native plants and grasses.  He researched and had produced all the signs naming the library’s plant and labyrinth features to educate and inspire us.  He was a tireless volunteer of his knowledge\, time\, resources and energy\, creating a comprehensive plant list of all the native plants and grasses that decorate the hills and arroyos surrounding the library\, gleaned from his 32-year residency in Placitas. \nFrom the beginning of his career in the National Park Service\, having served in Hawaii\, Carlsbad Caverns\, Yellowstone and Yosemite\, through his tenure with the Nature Conservancy in Albuquerque\, until his final few days he engaged in life and creativity\, editing and correcting the final drafts for his last book From Climbing Peaks to Saving Our Planet\, his memoirs.  Vangie\, Bill’s wife and devoted companion and other family members will distribute copies of the book at his celebration of life event. You can secure a copy of his final book by contacting Friesen Press\, Site 300\, 990 Fort Street\, Victoria\, BCV8V 3K2\, Canada or www.friesenpress.com. \nSo\, please join us for “one more hike with Bill” on October 26\, from 2 to 4 at the Placitas Community Library.  Walk around\, take in the beauty and imagine his voice guiding you every step of the way. \nIn lieu of flowers\, please make a donation to Placitas Public Library in Bill’s name (William W. Dunmire).  \nWritten and submitted by Suzanne Maxwell\, honored to be Bill’s friend \n

SUMMARY:Stress Relief at Your Fingertips by Matri Murphy
DESCRIPTION:Most of us living in this “modern” world are under chronic stress—this is known as “stress overload” and it’s something you feel everyday—this silently but continuously sabotages your well-being and limits access to a more fulfilling life. \nStress is a part of living. Chronic stress is very different than Acute stress. Acute stress is necessary for our survival. It’s the part of us that knows to run or stay very still when confronted with physical danger in our lives. Chronic stress inhibits our ability to come up with creative solutions when we’re faced with challenges. \nAlbert Einstein said it best… \n‘Problems cannot be solved with the same mind set that created them.’ \nWhen you’re in a state of heightened physiological alertness\, your brain’s creative center is deemed “non-essential” and shuts down. Your problem solving skills\, creativity and intuition shut down\, along with your ability to choose what’s most fulfilling for you.  After releasing too much cortisol for too long\, your body goes into “adrenal fatigue.” You feel depleted\, exhausted\, and depressed. Your decision-making skills are at an all time low\, and your growing feeling of hopelessness is making everything even worse. \nWhen using Tapping\, which blends Western talk therapy with Eastern wisdom about acupressure\, it’s been shown that there is a 24% decrease in cortisol (the stress hormone) after just one hour. Also\, 72 genes have been shown to express differently after one hour of tapping. \nTapping also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a surprising\, slightly strange and highly effective technique to significantly reduce chronic stress in your life. \nAnd it’s literally is available to you at your fingertips. \nJoin Certified EFT Practitioner and Emotional Fitness Teacher Marti Murphy for a captivating program that truly has the potential to change your life for the better\, by freeing you from the stress that can take over your life. Marti will teach us about EFT at the Placitas Community Library at 2pm on Saturday September 21.   Who wouldn’t be happier if we could ramp down our stress level.

SUMMARY:Icons and Symbols of the Borderland
DESCRIPTION:Those who live in New Mexico and the surrounding Southwestern States are familiar with the symbols that represent the culture\, landscape\, and people of the area. These symbols are found in art\, music\, nature\, religion\, even food. We see them but don’t always understand the meaning behind them. \nJoin Diana Molina for a program featuring an eclectic\, multifaceted portrayal that embodies the spirit of our regional heritage through symbols and iconographic representations\, sometimes with a distinctly modern twist. Diana’s visual presentation will include photos and art work that illustrate well-known symbols and some less familiar. The Virgin of Guadalupe\, Pancho Villa\, and the Mimbres Rock Art are the images that represent tradition\, history\, contemporary culture and nature. These reflect relationships of people\, land and culture in  our rich environment. \nThis program is made possible through the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
