SUMMARY:Exhibit: Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:COLLABORATION\nThe action of working with someone to produce or create something. \nMaking art is\, for the most part\, a solitary process. Artists toil alone in the studio and\, if they’re lucky\, find fellow “makers” with whom to share ideas and from whom they occasionally solicit feedback. \nThe Surrealists overcame their solitude by playing “Exquisite Corpse” a game where participants took turns drawing sections of a body on a sheet of paper folded to hide each individual contribution until the drawing was complete. (For a good time\, google their often bizarre results!) \nOther artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat joined forces from time to time with Warhol making marks on the canvas and Basquiat superimposing his own imagery on top. \nThe outcomes of such collaborations (and there are many more in the history of modern and contemporary art) were unpredictable\, often unimagined at the outset by the artists themselves and very different from each artist’s typical work. \nThis exhibit challenged artists to find a partner artist(s) to combine talents in creating fun\, freeing and unpredictable works of art. \nCollage Artists:  (L to R) Troutman/Hogan\, Sankovitz/Bower-Dennis\, Schooley/Caruso/Stuart

DESCRIPTION:In the digital age of “Kindle” reading and “Audible” listening\, many of us yearn for the days of picking up a book and “Turning the Pages.” \nThere is something about the feeling and artfulness of holding a book\, browsing through the beautifully illustrated art\, and beginning the journey of reading. \nLiterature is the inspiration for art works in this exhibit.

DESCRIPTION:Lost loves\, lost opportunities\, lost in space! \nNew found knowledge\, new found friends or found objects! \nArtists are encouraged to define and explore the experience of loss and the joy of new discoveries. \nWhether your focus is on a personal or communal experience\, consider employing repurposed\, rescued and reclaimed materials to enhance your narrative with materials that have also been “lost” and then “found”. \nImage by: Judith Zabel

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Roger Evans' Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:This retrospective exhibition was mounted in celebration of the 90th birthday of Roger Evans\, one of Placitas’s most cherished and colorful long-time residents. \nAssembled by the PCL Art Committee\, the exhibit includes examples of the architectural illustrations that helped support Evans’s early life in Placitas and models for a unique forward looking community envisioned by Evans but never realized. \nThere are also fantastical landscapes containing multiple-unit dwellings populated by a coterie of cows and other anthropomorphized beasts. These reveal not only the artist’s skillful hand but also his playful imagination. Fanciful sculptures and constructions also appear in the exhibit. Sly social commentary and the artist’s offbeat humor permeate his entire body of work. \nAs Roger might say\, “have fun with it.”

SUMMARY:Life in Focus - Jardineros Photo Group Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Assembled by members of the Jardineros  Photography Club\, the exhibit entitled “Life in Focus” reflects a broad spectrum of photographic intent and technique. \nThis manifests in the effort of these dedicated local photographers to push the medium beyond making a record of personal history and toward “an interpretation of reality\, not a documentation of reality\,” as Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide once described. \nMichael Wile\, the group’s coordinator for the exhibition\, points out that JPG is one of several special interest groups formed under the auspices of the Placitas organization “Jardineros.” He goes on to say that the group takes its name “from the file extension of an image saved in a compressed image format standardized by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG).” Members meet monthly and critique each others work\, providing everyone\, no matter their level of experience and achievement\, an opportunity to grow. \nParticipants in “Life in Focus” include John Allen\, Allen Bourne\, Roz Corriere\, Jeff Doll\, Vicki Kimmel\, Harriet Neal\, Jim Neal\, Michael Payton\, Charlotte Perry\, Mike Stoy\, Michael Wile and Joan Wood.

SUMMARY:Celebration of Color Fantasy Exhibit - Bead Society of New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Beaded Wonders! \nSparkling\, shimmering\, red and azure\, twisted threads and ornate pendants. The Bead Society of New Mexico presents a “Celebration of Color Fantasy” using the color wheel as inspiration. \nMember artists were encouraged to think outside the box to create a color fest of fanciful\, fantasy-inspired wearable art pieces appropriate for the holiday season—or ANY season—as well as additional works aimed solely at pleasing the eye.  Expect bead embroidery\, Kumihimo (a Japanese braiding technique)\, gem stone necklaces\, bracelets\, earrings and mixed media pieces. \nFor this newest exhibition in the Library’s Gracie Lee Community Room\, twenty-one artists offer this dazzling array of objects. \nParticipants include Karla Bakke\, Jill Bartel\, Collette Chamberlain\, Deb Cole\, Linda Davis\, Jeanette Easley\, Patti Farley\, Julie Fear\, Lisa Goldman\, Annie Gross\, Fran Hahn\, Sandy Johnson\, Diana Kirkpatrick\, Nancy Lanzilla\, Mary Ellen Merrigan\, Barbara Rosen\, Liz Sands\, Betty Smith\, Pam Troutman\, Geri Verble\, Pat Verrelle\, and Helen Yackel. \nThese and other members of the Bead Society\, founded in 1984\, are dedicated to the study\, discussion\, and exchange of information about beads and beadwork. They share their knowledge through educational programs\, workshops\, newsletters and websites. And now they are sharing their expertise through this exhibition.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception: Piece by Piece - Mosaic New Mexico Artist Collective
DESCRIPTION:Mosaic is a style of art where a larger image is created by arranging and attaching bits of clay\, glass\, stone or other materials directly to non-flexible surfaces. The resulting surfaces\, whether smooth or rough\, brilliantly hued or somber in color beg to be explored by human hands\, and these sturdy materials have the power to endure for a very long time. \nThis potential durability becomes clear when you consider the intricately patterned mosaics found on the floors of ancient synagogues and mosques in the Middle East\, the walls of the Alhambra in Granada\, Spain\, and in London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral or the ruins of Pompeii. Or consider more playful mosaic environments such as Antoni Gaudi’s Parc Guell in Barcelona\, designed between 1900 and 1914 and Simon Rodia’s Watts Towers in Los Angeles opened to the public in 1954. \nAll of these mosaic installations\, no matter their age\, exhibit a tactile energy and relevance that draws us to them. Perhaps it is for that very reason they have been used\, preserved\, lovingly touched\, and trod on by people for so many years. Surely this is why Mosaic New Mexico members and others have been inspired to continue to explore and update this ancient craft. \n

SUMMARY:Piece by Piece: Mosaic New Mexico Artist Collective Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:About Mosaic \nTraditionally\, mosaic is a style of art where a larger image is created by arranging and attaching bits of clay\, glass\, stone or other materials directly to non-flexible surfaces with cement and mortar to last through the ages. Today\, polymer cements\, silicone\, and other glues are frequently used as adhesives. In New Mexico\, many work on walls of stucco as well as dense foam covered with fiberglass mesh. Grout (a cement product) is applied between small pieces to set them into place. \nMosaic has limitations and infinite possibility\, as do all medias of art. It is an inherently labor intensive process. Long ago\, artistic designers employed craftspeople to cut and lay the stone or glass in mortar. The process today can involve an entire community or collaborative endeavors. Alternatively\, some artists work primarily alone or with partners to create their images. Most often\, helpers are involved\, one way or another. \nMosaic New Mexico Artist Collective \nMission: To provide a forum that will allow members to develop as artists through sharing knowledge\, ideas and techniques\, as well as participation in exhibits and gallery shows\, educational opportunities\, community projects and alternative venues for presentation of member’s work to the public at large. This is to be achieved by developing a professional image within the New Mexico art community and building lasting relationships with local businesses and other organizations that support the arts. \nMembers: Mosaic New Mexico welcomes a diverse group of New Mexico mosaic artists exploring mosaic techniques. These forms include but are not limited to: stained glass\, fused glass\, cast glass\, glass tile\, kiln formed ceramics\, ceramic tile\, found objects\, sculpture and wall pieces. Any New Mexico artist working with mosaics is encouraged to join\, whatever their level of experience. At this time\, Mosaic New Mexico membership will be limited to New Mexico artists only. \n                   \n  \n

The exhibit is moving; through his black and white photographs\, Wayne gives us a glimpse of the people and places of some 50 years ago. All are encouraged to visit the exhibit\, make a note in the guest book\, and join us for a reception in the CMR on October 16\, at 5:00 PM\, when Wayne’s family will focus on a selection of the people and places of Wayne’s Jones’ Placitas. \nIn November and December\, the CMR will present stories of San Antonio de Las Huertas Land Grant\, history of land grants\, growing up in the village of Placitas\, and the exciting activities of the current Land Grant community. An extensive list of topics\, stories to be featured\, is in the CMR. Everyone is invited to add to the list on the wall and sign up to share their stories of Placitas.

SUMMARY:The Gracie Lee Room Inaugural Exhibition - Placitas Studio Tour Artists
DESCRIPTION:When life gives you lemons…. \nAs you are no doubt aware\, the 2020 Placitas Studio Tour was canceled due to the pandemic. What was to be the first exhibit in Placitas Community Library’s new Gracie Lee Community room featuring 2020 PST artists’ work became a virtual exhibition because of delayed completion of that space. So where\, you ask\, is our “lemonade?” \nHere is the sweet reward for your patience.  All 2021 Placitas Studio Tour artists have been invited to submit one representative piece of their artwork to hang in the library beginning July 10 celebrating the soft opening of the library’s wonderful new addition. The exhibit will continue through the end of July\, offering a preview of the 24th annual Placitas Studio Tour scheduled for August 28-29\, 2021.  This presents an excellent opportunity for artists to strut their stuff prior to once again inviting the community into their studios. The studio tour is free and is self-guided and self-driven and has become one of the most highly anticipated studio tours in New Mexico.  This year\, fifty-seven artists will open their studio doors and share with the public their fascinating artwork which is as diverse and captivating as the artists themselves. \nPST 2021 brochures will be available at each participating artist’s studio and at the Homestead Village located on HWY 165. Please visit the tour’s web site to download the tour map and preview the artists in this year’s tour at www.placitasstudiotour.com. We anticipate that huge numbers of Placitans will want to make a point to come see the new\, eagerly anticipated library addition as well as a sampling of the art created for the studio tour. \nOn July 10 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm\, the library will host a “Sneak Peek” of our new and expanded facility\, offering an opportunity for community members to familiarize themselves with the new space while also planning their August trek through the studios of the many talented artists of Placitas. Purchases made from the library exhibit will benefit both the artist and the library which will receive 25% of the artwork’s purchase price.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Off the Wall
DESCRIPTION:Think of this exhibition as lemonade. You know\, like when life gives you lemons and you make something delicious out of them. In the “before-times\,” Placitans frequently gathered at the library en masse to hear marvelous lectures on myriad topics\, chairs set up front to back and side to side in the Collin Meeting Room with late-comers standing and sitting amid the library stacks beyond the opened double doors. \nThere was little opportunity to present three-dimensional objects as part of library exhibitions. But now\, with the pandemic restricting the use of the space to a limited number of attendees\, the need to protect sculpture and wall-hung objects from careless movements\, chair backs and broad shoulders has pretty much disappeared. \n“Female Torso” by Stephen Feher\nIn response to these new circumstances\, the November/December “Off the Wall” exhibition was conceived. The temporarily restricted access to the room presents an opportunity to display the usual assortment of occasionally fanciful\, always accomplished paintings as well as objects on pedestals or wall-hung constructions that jut into the room and might otherwise have been in jeopardy. \nSixteen artists have contributed both two- and three-dimensional work for this exhibition. They include Carolyn Berry\, Connie Falk\, Stephen Feher\, Jensue Hawks\, Jim Holley\, Karen Jacobs\, Lavon Maestas\, Karen Jones Meadows\, Joseph Koetler\, Tobin Levy\, Joanne Lim-Pousard\, Bobby Lopez\, Rebecca Nolda\, Alfons Schuster\, Lee Small and Katherine Wilson. \n“Lidded Vessel” by Joseph Koetter\nExpect a mix of two- and three-dimensional objects\, some physically and others thematically “off the wall.” \nTo preview the exhibition or to review the work after first visiting the library\, take a virtual tour. Beginning Saturday\, November 7\, “Off the Wall” can be viewed in the Collin Meeting Room during the Library’s Special Operating Hours: Tuesdays 3-7 p.m.\, Thursdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturdays 1-5 p.m. \nPlease check the website or call (505) 867-3355 for schedule changes or to leave a message to arrange access to the work in the exhibit. \nAll artwork is available for purchase online at PLCart.placitaslibrary.com or through the library and 25-percent of sales will benefit the PCL as it moves toward inaugurating the new Nancy P. Kellum-Rose and Scott W. Deuel Wing where future exhibitions will take place beginning early in 2021. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Flights of Fancy
DESCRIPTION:“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth\,” wrote John Gillespie Magee\, Jr. in his oft-quoted poem High Flight\, “and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings…put out my hand\, and touched the face of God.” The entire poem appears on the back of the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery proving yet again that art—whether poetry or music or the visual arts—possesses the power to reflect and channel human aspirations and emotions in ways that touch us all. \nFor “Flights of Fancy\,” the October exhibition in the Placitas Community Library’s Collin Meeting Room (and available virtually\, local artists offer their own observations on the wonders of flying and striving for freedom of movement with no boundaries. Their work portrays the sensation of soaring and swooping\, whether emotionally or in fact. \nThe 21 artists represented in this exhibit employ a variety of artistic media from painting to pottery to achieve their aims. Participants include Roberta Allen\, Carolyn Berry\, Jeri Burzin\, Judy Carlson\, Charlie Christmann\, Christiane Couvert\, Lauren Deyo\, Cristina Diaz-Armtzen\, Pat Gould\, Lesley Long\, Melissa Lowry Mosley\, Barbara Marx\, Elizabeth Potter\, Judith Roderick\, Catalina Salinas\,Terri Sankovitz\, Alfons Schuster\, Lee Small\, Barbara Taub\, Corrine Vialpando\, and Mary Whiteside. Exhibition Coordinator Margaret Bruch describes this newest PCL Art Committee venture as a “soaring success!” \n \nBeginning Saturday\, October 3\, “Flights of Fancy” can be viewed in the Collin Meeting Room during the Library’s Special Operating Hours: Tuesdays 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.\, Thursdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, and Saturdays 1 to 5:00 p.m. Please check the library schedule or call (505) 867-3355 for changes or to leave a message to arrange access to the work in the exhibit. \nAll work is available for purchase online or through the library and 25 percent of sales will benefit PCL as it moves toward inaugurating the new Nancy P.
