SUMMARY:Cat Tales: Art Exhibit July and August
DESCRIPTION:Sigmund Freud said it best. “Time spent with cats is never wasted.” Accordingly\, the Placitas Community Library Art Committee is excited to offer an opportunity to observe a host of fascinating felines at rest and at play. \nBeginning July 7 and continuing through August 27\, this PCL exhibit will be available for the first time both in the library’s Collin Room and as a virtual exhibition online at PCLArt.com. \n“Just like cats\, the artwork for CAT TALES is beautiful\, quirky\, expressive\, and unexpected\,” says Elizabeth Potter\, the exhibit’s coordinator. “Cats may have only one tail\, but every cat has lots of tales to share.” \nEach is told by participating artists in a unique and appealing way through mixed media on paper\, appliqued and pieced quilts\, pastel drawings and more. \nExhibitors include Susan Burden\, Tobin Levy\, Lesley Long\, Melissa Lowry Mosley\, Lavon Maestas\, Mary Mahon-Foley\, Linda Nystrom\, Judith Roderick\, Pam Troutman and Lisa Zawadzki. \nAs always\, works are available for purchase with 25% of the price benefiting the library. \nBeginning July 7\, the CAT TALES exhibit can be viewed in the Collin Meeting Room during the library’s Special Operating Hours on Tuesdays 3-7 p.m.\, Thursdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturdays 1-5 p.m. \nPlease check the library website or call (505) 867-3355 for schedule changes or to leave a message to arrange access to the work in the exhibit. SUMMARY:Chester Nez: World War II Navajo Code Talker
DESCRIPTION:“Born to the Navajo Nation\, now a Marine—Private First Class Chester Nez—I’d never seen the ocean before enlisting\,” recalled one of the original code talkers on a transport ship to Guadalcanal where the Japanese enemy waited in 1942.  “I reminded myself that my Navajo people had always been warriors\, protectors. In that there was honor. I would concentrate on being a warrior and on protecting my homeland. Within hours\, whether in harmony with this world or not\, I knew I would join my fellow Marines in the fight.” \nChester Nez died in 2014 at age 93. But his firsthand account lives on in Code Talker\, the bestselling memoir with author Judith Schiess Avila\, who recorded and transcribed seventy-five hours of tapes of his spoken words. \nHear how his wartime story was preserved when author Judith Avila and Latham Nez\, Chester’s grandson\, present a New Mexico Humanities Council Speakers Bureau Program “Chester Nez: World War II Navajo Code Talker“ at 2 PM in the Collin Room of the Placitas Library on February 22. \nHear how Nez volunteered to go to war even though his Navajo people were not allowed to vote and were punished as children if they spoke their native language at school. \nHear how he and twenty-eight others\, who were articulate in Navajo and English\, developed the famed Navajo code\, the only unbroken spoken code in modern warfare that helped the United States win the war against the Japanese. \nHear how the men devised Navajo word equivalents for the English alphabet. They were especially pleased after settling on J and Z\, the most difficult letters. “Jackass\,” code word tkele-cho-gi and “zinc\,” code word besh-do-tliz. \nHear how the code talkers were\, at long last\, honored as heroes in 2001 for their WW II efforts. President George W. Bush awarded Congressional Gold Medals to the twenty-nine Navajos and recognized some 400 other code talkers for “their individual service\, bravely offered and flawlessly performed.” Accompanying Chester Nez was his family\, including grandson Latham Nez. \nAfter that belated recognition\, Chester Nez recalled\, “I was in even greater demand as a speaker. I traveled all over for interviews\, wearing my official code talkers’ uniform. A red peaked cap represented the Marines. A gold shirt\, with a 3rd Division patch on the arm\, stood for corn pollen. Navajo jewelry showed respect for the Navajo people\, the Dine´. Light-colored pants recalled the earth and all of its inhabitants.” \nJoin us Saturday\, February 22\, 2020 at 2:00 PM in the Collin Meeting Room at the Placitas Community Library to hear author Judith Avila retell the heroic story of Chester Nez.

SUMMARY:Placitas Public Star Party
DESCRIPTION:Autumn is coming\, and that means the Placitas Star Party isn’t far off. This year’s event will take place at Placitas Elementary School on Saturday\, October 12. The star party starts at dusk\, as the first celestial objects shine in the evening sky (sunset is around 6:24 p.m.)\, and continues into the night. There will be a variety of types and sizes of telescopes to guide you to the wonders of our dark skies provided by our friends at The Albuquerque Astronomical Society.\n\nThe Placitas Star Party is free and open to all people between the ages of ages 1 day and 120 years. So bring your family\, friends and your curiosity. The enthusiastic members of The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS) will be on hand to share their knowledge of the heavens as well as the different telescopes on hand. Star Parties are a fun and informal way to learn\, meet other sky watchers and inspire lifelong learning about our universe.\n\nIt is highly recommended that you arrive well before dark for ease of parking and for watching the setup of the various types of telescopes. Dress warmly and only use red flashlights or headlamps in the observing area in order to preserve night vision.\n\nFor more information\, see taas.org\,  contact 867-3355 or email to taas@taas.org.\n  \nDirections: From I-25\, take exit 242 to highway 165. Drive east on 165 for 6.5 miles to the Placitas Elementary School on the left. Look for the green sign with white lettering that says “Placitas Elementary School” and turn left there onto the school’s one-way driveway loop. 5 Cam de Carbon. \nOn your way to the school along Highway 165\, you will pass the Placitas Library and Placitas Volunteer Fire Department on the left\, and further down the road the Placitas Post Office on the right. Start looking for the school sign just after you pass the post office.
