Beginning around 10am you are invited to place stones marking the path of the sun’s shadow. The placing of stones to create this pattern will continue every 15 minutes throughout the day. \nIn cooperation with The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS)\, there will be opportunities to safely view our sun’s activity in the form of solar flares and sun spots. \nAt 2pm\, Tony Hull will again speak about the James WEBB Space Telescope\, this time with a focus on what we are seeing in the glorious images from the scope and what astronomy is learning about the universe.

DESCRIPTION:Historian Nancy Bartlit will speak at the Placitas Community Library on February 18 at 2pm. Her talk “Silent Voices of World War II\,” will illustrate five aspects of New Mexico encounters with Japan. These include the Bataan Death March which 2000 NM National Guardsmen endured. The Navajo Code Talkers whose innovative use of their language created an unbreakable code which was critical to our success in the Pacific. She will also highlight voices from the shameful history of the Japanese internment camp in Santa Fe\, the secret Manhattan Project\, and questions around the reason for the Japanese surrender.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Dianna’s art world. \nWe invite you to view and become acquainted with her work and what it means to her\, and further your appreciation for the abstract art that has evolved in tandem with her life.   Not all of her work is abstract\, as is also true of other artists. \nDianna is an intuitive soul. She loves a good puzzle.  That’s what art is\, the unraveling of a puzzle through curiosity\, experimentation\, and observation.  Dianna Shomaker’s work will be exhibited in the Gracie Lee Community Library to view and purchase. \nDianna retired as a Professor Emeritus from the University of New Mexico in 2000.  Her work can be seen at the Shomaker Studio and Gallery in Placitas. \nwww.diannashomaker.com

DESCRIPTION:Explore the Art of Fiber  \nFiber or textile art is considered the oldest form of art. The first fiber was plain and created only to solve a utilitarian need.  But a plain “canvas” sparked artist to embellish and decorate it.  Artist have been using fibers obtained from plants\, animals\, and insects to create since prehistoric times. \nTextiles in wall hangings and rugs kept our homes draft fee. Fiber clothes us and decorates our homes.  Fiber ropes and sails conquered the world.  Fiber covered airplanes concurred the skies.  While ”plain” fiber facilitated evolutionary gains through history; fiber artist are driven to beautify the fabrics that civilized our world. \nArtists are encouraged to explore all the possibilities fiber brings to art.
