Did you know there is a Night Sky Protection Act in New Mexico?…that there are 37 Night Sky Parks in the United States?..that there are also Night Sky Preserves?…that Placitas sponsors Night Sky Parties?

New Mexico residents are blessed with dark skies filled with amazing displays of planets, stars, even comets, often visible to the naked eye and providing a perfect setting for Night Sky Parties.

To ensure that we preserve our dark skies, Sandoval County has put regulations in place to ensure minimal light pollution, reduce glare, increase energy conservation and reduce lighting that affects astronomical observation. Many local homeowners’ associations restrict outdoor lighting fixtures to those that are down-facing, shielded and use the minimum amount of light needed.

On Saturday, February 15th, the Placitas Community Library will present a program on the dark sky by Charlie Christmann, a Placitas resident, amateur astronomer, and former Sandoval County Probate Judge. Charlie is best known for his monthly “Signpost” columns on solar cycles, moon phases and all things “sky” worthy. He will update us on what’s happening currently in our skies, including our dark skies, and what we, as individuals and a community, can do to protect this scenic resource from light pollution. You don’t have to be a scientist to help. In this presentation, Charlie will share many common-sense, easy ways to protect this important resource for future generations and also information on dark sky adventures beyond our community

Join us on Saturday, February 15th, at 2:00 pm, at the Placitas Community Library.
