The Children’s Committee is eager to present our Summer Reading Program to your preschoolers and children in elementary school. The theme is “UNEARTH A STORY.” This theme comes from the Collaborative Summer Learning Program (CSLP) which is used in all 50 states of our country and territories.
There are many stories that will be told in June including magic with John Polinko, Digging Up Dinosaur Bones with Denise Gard and her dogs, Joey and Kira, and many more dinosaur activities on Father’s Day. The last program in June will be presented by drummer, Kevin Kinane. Children will be able to play his fabulous international drums.
The stories will continue in July with three additional programs on the life of New Mexico Raptors presented by Laura McCann and her NM hawk, owl, and turkey vulture. Additionally, glass artist, Karen Shatar will assist children in creating their own story on a mosaic. Finally, Explora educators will bring several science activities featuring experiments about the earth.
The summer stories actually begin in May with the Fun with Dinosaurs on May 12 at the Pre-K Story Time at 10:00 AM and on May 17 when archaeologist, Ziggy Prothro, brings a hands on, interactive exhibit about Ice Age Americans. This program features animal artifacts such as a sabretooth cat skull. The Ice Age is coming!
The most important of the summer is the reading challenge where children record the titles of the books they read on a reading log; then receive a raffle ticket at each program for a prize drawing. To sign up, click here for the form. The instructions are on the form.
Children also will select a new book at each program starting on May 17. If they attend all programs, that is a total of 8 new books for their personal library. Encouraging children to read during the summer is the entire purpose of the summer reading programs. They will continue to increase their reading level throughout the year.
Please join us for reading, educational activities, and fun. Here is the flier for June and the flyer for July.
