Details

Day of the Dead is typically celebrated on November 1 and 2, coinciding with All Saints’ Day.

It is filled with happiness and love as family members and friends of all ages come together to celebrate and honor the lives of those who have passed away. It is celebrated through storytelling, music, and dancing – believing that the spirits return to visit the living.

Altars, known as “ofrendas”, are adorned with flowers, food, and items of the deceased to welcome their spirit. Marigolds are used to decorate altars and are believed to please the spirits. They also signify the beauty and fragility of life.

All forms of art representing this tradition: altars, painted faces, colorful flowers, and painted skulls are an integral part of this celebration and will be on display during this exhibit.

Coordinators: Geri Verble & Katie Thomas
