Each month, I interview a different volunteer at PCL so we can all get to know each other a little better. Who should I interview next month? Email me your suggestions.
What do you do at the library?
I am the children’s collection development coordinator. I order all the children’s books after consulting and reading several sources. I weed the collection and put up book displays pertinent to various topics or holidays. I write the monthly Children’s Book News for the library newsletter. I also help with children’s programming.
How long have you been volunteering?
I have been a volunteer at the library since its inception in 2004. I remember placing carpet squares for flooring in the children’s room in our original little library and arranging donated books on the shelving. So I guess it’s been 15 years!
What is your favorite part about volunteering?
I have always been fascinated with children’s literature – the art work, the writing, etc. and so I truly enjoy reading about the books that are available today and then being able to order some of these for our library. I also enjoy having the opportunity to work with children once again.
Where are you from?
I grew up in Michigan, which is a beautiful state, but always wanted to live out west. After graduating from college, I came out here for my first teaching job and, except for a couple years away, have lived in New Mexico ever since.
What did/do you do for work?
I was an elementary school teacher. I taught all grades but mostly 2nd and 3rd. My last seven years of teaching were in gifted education, which encompassed all elementary grades.
What do you love most about Placitas?
I love having the natural world of the southwest right outside our windows – being able to take just a few steps and hike in the BLM space and seeing incredible sunsets most every evening.
Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy gardening, hiking (and looking for wildflowers which has always been a passion of mine), reading, traveling and being a grandmother! I love to bike on the paved bosque trail when I can. Recently, I’ve have begun experimenting with creating collages.
Do you have a favorite book, author, or genre to read?
It’s hard to pick just one author. Kent Haruf, Ivan Doig, John Steinbeck, Anne Tyler, Candice Millard are among some of my favorites.
