After a search that extended over several months, Placitas Community Library has found a true gem in Tim Blevins as our new library director. An experienced search committee pored through applications, conducted interviews, and checked references. We strongly encourage everyone to meet Tim, who will begin on January 6. Please stop by to introduce yourself.
Members of the search committee and the board of directors have found Tim not only grandly knowledgeable about libraries but also very smart and an overall wonderful and gentle person. He shares what he knows quite willingly, making him just what any library needs and what we, in our diverse community, can appreciate. During the first few months of Tim’s tenure, library volunteers will help orient Tim to the library and to our community.
Tim spent the past 18 years with the Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD), serving the residents of El Paso County, Colorado. As Chief Public Services Officer at PPLD, he supervised the directors of three regions overseeing 14 branches and mobile library services (bookmobiles), as well as the directors overseeing seven district-wide service areas, including: Children’s, Young Adult, and Adult Services; Creative Services; Adult Education; Collection Management; and Regional History and Genealogy. We believe his background and interest in these areas, particularly regional history and genealogy fit directly with the needs of our community members. Early on, we plan to connect with community partners, including the art community, San Antonio de Las Huertas Land Grant, and Jardineros de Placitas.
“It is an honor to be selected to serve the Placitas community as the director of PCL,” Tim said. “I am awed by the dedication demonstrated by the board, staff, and the residents to ensure superior resources and services and I am excited to contribute to such a loved library.” Although Tim has been living in our neighbor state, Colorado, he and his wife are native New Mexicans. A third-generation New Mexican, Blevins was raised in Santa Fe and earned a BA in journalism at New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Las Cruces. He worked at NMSU for more than 12 years during which time he earned a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin via their distance learning program.
Tim said that he and his wife, Marilyn, and their son, Sterling, are sad to leave friends in Colorado Springs and PPLD, but they are looking forward to returning to New Mexico where they also have many friends and family. Tim likes researching and writing about the history of the Southwest, Marilyn enjoys sewing and New Mexican cooking, and Sterling keeps busy as a senior at New Mexico Tech in Socorro.
We learned that, prior to knowing about the position of Director, Tim and Marilyn had already been searching for a home in Placitas. We are looking forward to working with Tim and sharing Placitas with him and his family.
