Don’t Wait — Registration started May 17th

May 17th – July 15th

Our goal is 1000+ books read by our children this summer.

Registration for our Summer Reading Challenge starts on Tuesday, May 17th.  You may register at the library help desk any time during regular library hours. You will receive a folder from a volunteer with all the info on our weekly programs and how to register for the challenge.  Please follow the directions on the handout called SUMMER READING CHALLENGE, 2016.  Your child will receive prizes and another free book on July 15th for participating in the challenge.  Click here for more details.

You do not need to register for all weekly programs.  Just come when you can!  You may participate in as many programs and the Reading Challenge as you have time.  Scientific research has shown that children who read during the summer are better prepared for school in the fall.

We are in the middle of planning our Summer Reading Program.  The theme is “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” focusing on activity, fitness, and nutrition for children.  We have scheduled several exciting programs running from June 3-July 15.  These programs are free of charge — located at the Placticas Community Library on Friday mornings at 10:00 am for ages infant-12.  The topics include:

Animal Athletes ImageFriday, June 3rd, 10:00 am — Animal Athletes!

Storytellers Liz Mangual and Bob Kanegis will present “High Flyers, Fast Runners and Deep Divers!  Animal Athletes in Fact and Story.” In this highly participatory storytelling program for all ages, the presenters weave together natural history and folktales while encouraging kids to stay active and healthy in the summer.

2016:  Markets run May 28 — October 22.

The Market will be held on the second and fourth Saturdays May through October of each month in the fields west of the Merc from 7 AM to 2 PM.

Make plans now to rent a space to sell your treasures. It’s first come, first served for vendor spots –no reservations. The fee for a space is still just $10, and we offer optional tents for $15 and tables for $10 each. Vendor fees support the library. If you have questions, contact Ellen McMahon at 505-404-8657 or email

If you have gently-used items to donate for the library’s sales table – costume jewelry, housewares, accessories – they can be dropped off at the library.  Please, no clothing or large pieces of furniture.  Sorry, but sales of foods or drink are not permitted.  Firearms are also prohibited.

The location is the Homestead Village Shopping Center field west of the Merc, 221 Hwy 165, Placitas.

Want to help? We need volunteers to help with the set up of the flea market area, putting up and taking down signs, and the library’s sales table. Sign-up sheets for volunteering will be at the library’s Help Desk.
